Notes on
FOLIC ACID IN CANINE

It has been known for years now that FOLIC ACID, or Vitamin B9 prevents neuro tube defects in humans
if taken during pregnancy. Studies have been done in Boston Terriers, who are known for cleft palates in the breed
(as are shih-tzu) that it has eliminated the defect when given during breeding and pregnancy. I have eliminated it also among the my shih-tzu by giving 1 400 mcg pill daily during breeding.  The reports on the net about Folic acid given to Boston Terriers, reports ease of birth and reduction of needed c-sections if given 3 generations.  I do not personally agree that  Folic Acid is the reason for this, but WILL attest to faster birthing time and far less c-sections if given throughout the pregnancy.  The litters size increased and the birth weight is far better.
I am currently experimenting with this vitamin to help bring dogs with delayed heat cycles (past 7 months) into heat more regularly. I will be giving this with Omega 3, so
the results will not be clear.  I know taking the Omega 3 in the form of Flax Seed Oil has greatly improved my own
hormone levels, and I my hypertension  is much better after 6 weeks of the vitamin. I am anxious to see what
it does long term in kenneled dogs.

I recently read that Folic Acid is being used in periodontal disease in humans and heart disease.
Dogs in general, when older, have gum problems.
I am curious to see if this will improve/prevent the condition on my old dogs.
During the administration of the Folic Acid to dogs in heat, we found it helps eliminate tear staining.
When bitches are given Folic Acid post-partum, their milk supply increases. We find that Brewer's yeast
given will greatly increase fat content of the bitches milk. it also increases appetite, so that may account for
richer milk.
